FACULTY SEMINAR 1998

INDIA

An early morning boat ride on the Ganges River is an experience in itself. Hundreds of people come to the river for their daily ritual bath.

Midday activity in one of the ghats.--merchants and the general public fill the ghats and surrounding streets.

The assault on the senses

The caress of the senses

Surely God made India at his leisure.

--Gita Mehta, Snakes and Ladders

He said: "In a single day

I'm forced to listen to a dozen film songs,
to see a score of beggars
to touch uncounted strangers,
to smell unsmellable smells,
to taste my bitter native city."
He said: "I'm forced by the five senses
to fear the five senses."
I heard him out
In black wordlessness.

--Nissim Ezekiel, 1976
