School Days
September 1, 1999

School's back. It's been a busy Summer. The Alumni system has converted, web registration is alive and well, the Banner User Guide is back from the Print Shop and the new University web site is up and running. I've got more projects that are just beginning: I'm working with a few folks to get an admissions application on the web by October 15; I'm going to hold a bunch of half-hour Banner classes to introduce the user guide to all campus users. There's more, but I'm sure I'll talk about those things when the time comes around.

Colette is more fun with each passing day. She's been sitting on her own for more than two months now, and she's got somewhere between three and five teeth (it's tough to know for sure since she squirms when I'm trying to look). Meals are more interesting, for everyone involved. She's still fairly neat since she's not working the spoon herself, but she has her own pace with each thing we give her to eat. First it's half a bottle. Then perhaps carrots or sweet potatoes. Then she gets distracted by the wind blowing outside and stares into space. Returning to the room, she wants the bottle again before eating more veggies. After another break researching the texture of the high chair, we switch to fruit. Bananas are her favorite. If you ask me it looks like mucous pudding, especially the way it clings to itself. Still, once we're onto bananas, she's focused until we're through.

Tonight Colette was in a very good mood. This despite a sore lip caused by one of her new teeth. After dinner I put her into her playpen for ten minutes while I cleaned the kitchen. She never complained. After that we played on the couch quietly for more than half an hour. I read to her, but she was more interested in trying out her syllables. So we conversed for a while. She became bored with her toys and leaned forward to grab my knee. That's universal baby sign language for "I'm bored. Pick me up now." As I sat her on my lap, she smiled. We continued talking until Jean came home (Jean worked late and stole Colette from me so she'd have some baby time before bed time).

I'm hoping that with the return of school, I'll return to more regular entries here. I've been surprised and pleased by the number of people who've been harassing me for new entries.

It has been too long.

After weeks and weeks of temperatures in the upper 90's, it is a relief to have a week in the mid-70's. Come on Fall!
