On Top of Spaghetti
June 24, 1999

Jean's sick. She called me at the end of the day to say she was achy all over. She took a nap early this evening, but by ten o'clock her temperature was over 100. She's asleep now, and I've told her if she's still feeling bad tomorrow that she has to stay home so she can get better as quickly as possible. Ordinarily she won't take a sick day unless she can barely get out of bed. Now that Colette is here, we both need to be more sensible about taking time so we don't drag out our illnesses by trying to work our way through them.

I spent most of the evening with Colette. She was asleep when I got home at six, after a day of fussiness at day care. It's not easy making a tooth. She woke up at eight and stayed up until about ten thirty, and wasn't fussy at all. I gave her a bath again tonight. She's getting to be too big for the little blue baby tub but she hasn't yet developed the ability to sit up yet. We played some during her bath, and we sat with each other watching TV after Jean went to bed. Her eyes seemed brown tonight, but tomorrow morning they'll probably look blue again. She's become interested in things. I danced a Snoopy rattle in front of her and watched as her eyes found it again and again. She'd reach for the rattle and play with it. It's still too early to tell if she's right-handed like Jean and me or if she's a South paw. Once she had the rattle she'd wave it about before trying to chew on it. She loves listening to people sing, and I am shocked to discover how many old songs I remember (sing it with me: Miss Lou-Lou had a steamboat...).

The best part is that Colette is getting ticklish. She's the most fun in the middle of a diaper change, but now we have fun all the time. Her laugh is coming along too. I'll have to try to get a recording and load it here sometime.

weather
It was nice today. Lee and I walked over to the Dining Hall at lunchtime and even in the heat of the day it was pleasant. By the end of the day some clouds were rolling in. I'm not sure if we're due for more rain soon or not.
