A Quiet Evening
June 23, 1999

It's quiet tonight. Earlier, after work, Jean went out to have dinner with some old friends. I worked late, catching up on my real work life after spending three days in a class learning PL/SQL. Learning might be too strong a word. Absorbing might work better, since the class went beyond my ability to understand (I've never been a programmer and am only now beginning to get SQL*Plus down).

So after working a bit late I came home. Jean and Colette were still out. I let the dogs out of their cage, and they tore out through the doggie door, to spend most of the evening outside. I ate dinner in the den (spaghetti again tonight), watching TV and thinking about what I might do with this "free" time I'd been given.

Before I'd finished my meal, a baby appeared outside the window. She was suspended in mid air, and seemed quite surprised to find herself that way. As I went to the window, she seemed even more surprised to see me. I opened the window and greeted her (and Jean, who had been standing a bit off to the side). Then I pulled her through the window, leaving Jean to fend for herself, and sat down on the sofa to play. Colette had done well in the restaurant, but eventually became fussy, so they came home early.

Colette was wearing her pink overalls with a white polo-style shirt. It's the outfit I put her in this morning, and I'm always impressed when she makes it through the day in just one outfit. I gave her a bottle and changed her clothes. Jean took her out for a walk through the neighborhood.

While they were gone, I started cleaning up. You can never have too much Tilex. They returned while I was still cleaning, and after a short while, Colette went to bed. Even though she's getting her first tooth, she still manages to sleep through the night. The rest of the night Jean and I have both been off in different parts of the house, restoring order for one more day.

So even though Jean and Colette have been here for most of the evening, it's been a quiet night for me.

weather
For the past three days I've been in class in a room with no windows. By the time I've gotten back outside it's nice and cool. But I'm just not sure what the weather's been like lately.
