Good Morning
April 12, 1999

It's five in the morning. Colette woke up at 4:30. She needed a diaper change and a bottle. Not too bad, considering she fell asleep last night around ten while Jean and I were watching Lethal Weapon. This 4:30 thing is becoming regular: it seems like every other day she's on this schedule. The other days she wakes closer to 2:30. In all cases she's usually back asleep within half an hour. The only difference is whether I go back to sleep. Since I'm trying to get up early these days I don't mind the 4:30 wake-ups at all.

Time to get the coffee brewing.

It's been a pleasant weekend. Jean and I started the weekend with her proposal that we both try to schedule the weekend, working from lists of all the things we wanted to accomplish. By early Saturday morning (while both Jean and Colette were still sleeping) I had my list together. It was an ambitious list, and I can't say I expected to finish all of the items on it: my problem these days is that there are too many things that either need doing or that I want to do. My goal each day is to get the proper proportion of both the needs and the wants done. Trying to simplify (i.e. eliminate what can be eliminated) is also good.

Jumping on-line to check for messages...

Saturday was the day to be outdoors. It was sunny all day, with temperatures in the low seventies (at least that's what it felt like). I spent part of the morning cleaning up the front lawn. We've got about 25 trees on our little half-acre. Many of them are older trees, well over fifty feet high. These trees tend to drop branches frequently (we're going to have the trees checked before too long to make sure they're okay), and now that I actually care about the place I'll be picking up more often.

The baby just stirred in the other room – gotta check on her.

She's still asleep. Might as well pour a cup of coffee while I'm up.

Jean and I talked at length on Saturday about where we're going to start fixing up the house. Part of the deal in closing the house was a substantial check from the seller that's going to go to some repairs we insisted had to be done. It's mostly electrical or plumbing work. These repairs are going to be our first priority, but we're not too sure what our second priority is going to be. We both agree that the kitchen is in dire need of a remodeling, but Jean seems to want to get started, while I want to save up some money first so we can do it all at once. We're talking about it.

It rained on Sunday. We never got the thunderstorms the weather people promised, just a light rain all day long. Jean, Colette and I spent the day organizing. Colette was kind enough to sleep for most of the morning and afternoon. I had her in her bouncy chair right next to me. She's smiling regularly now. I'm looking forward to showing her off again to my family when we get together later this month for my father's birthday.

I need to get some of her pictures onto the baby page. Three now, perhaps more tomorrow.

It's now just after six in the morning. I'm going to have to wrap this up so I can get to work. Jean is dropping me off so I can walk home at the end of the day. It's going to be a busy week: I've got a deadline for the Banner User Guide, Ellen will announce the new organizational structure for Information Services, and we've got our first Parent-Teacher Organization meeting Tuesday night!

weather
We're expecting it to be in the lower sixties today, and sunny. Should make for a pleasant walk home. The dogwoods are still in bloom and flowers seem to be everywhere.
