Big Brother
March 10, 1999

I spoke with my brother Shane today. This morning, while surfing the net for computer news, I came across an article at Wired News about Dirty Tricks in Philly Politics. Shane still lives in Philadelphia and he's supported one of the candidates for the upcoming mayoral election. I don't know all the particulars, but someone indirectly connected to his candidate posted a web site that cast an unfavorable light on the opposing candidate in a sly way. Shane had told me about the controversy, which has been big news in Philadelphia, so I thought I'd let him know that the national press has begun to take an interest.

When I called him at his office, his secretary told me that he was out sick. His whole family has had the pleasure of tangling with that nasty stomach flu that's going around this winter. They've only just gotten through that and now Shane's got the cold flu that's going around. I left him a message – he was sick enough that he had gone to the doctor's office – telling him about the Wired News story and wishing him well.

After a round of phone tag, we finally got to talk. I had a great time talking with Shane. We talked about his health (he feels he's on the mend) and about Colette (if she's got colic, it's an easy case of it). From there we moved on to other topics. He was having problems with Netscape and a web site. While I didn't find the problem conclusively I think the problem was a stupid JavaScript that moved an image around on the page. The problem wasn't with the JavaScript directly; the problem was that the pages were so image laden that Shane wasn't waiting for them to finish loading before he clicked on the next link. I think the JavaScript was having trouble manipulating the image on a page that was interrupted, so Netscape shut down.

The technical issue aside, we talked about everything, from wind surfing to Wing Commander Prophecy (I told him to download the demo). It was nice to catch up with him again. I may get to see him and everyone in Philadelphia before March is over, but plans are still in the works for that.

weather
We ended up with about an inch of snow. There was a layer of ice beneath the snow on my car this morning, so I knew I had to be careful on the road. By the end of the work day all the snow had melted and the sun was shining. I'm still very happy we had this brief taste of Winter.

A notify list, for those who'd like to know each time I post a new entry. Before Colette arrived it was fairly easy to post every day. While I still plan to post most days, the notify list may simplify things for you.
