Sick Day Number One

Ugh.

I think I caught the flu from Terry this past weekend. When he and his family stopped by this past Monday night, he went to bed early because he was feeling so bad. When I woke up yesterday I had that ache that only comes when I've got the flu. Still, I managed to make it through the day (Jean suggested I come home for a noontime nap, but I knew if I slept I'd be down for the count). When I got home I slept from five to seven, when Jean came home.

We broke out the digital ear thermometer we got at Saturday's baby shower, and Jean took my temperature. It's a pretty neat little gadget, and I'm glad to have it (especially since we would never have spent the sixty dollars to buy one for ourselves). I was over one hundred degrees (Fahrenheit), so Jean and I agreed that she would have to keep her distance.

I went to bed around eleven last night and had a rough night. I woke up at three and was awake until five, tossing and turning. Sometime after five I fell back asleep, and I woke up at six, and seven. Just before eight o'clock Jean came in (she'd slept in the guest room to keep from catching this thing), and I was still over one hundred degrees. So I called in sick to work for the first time this year (I think). I had one meeting scheduled today - one I very much wanted to have - and I called everyone to cancel it.

Jean went to work and I told her I'd be getting up in just a few minutes. She woke me at 9:30, surprised I was asleep. I didn't even know I'd fallen asleep. Just after I hung up, Jean called again, except it was now 10:30. At least I was getting some sleep.

Finally I got up. I took my temperature (back to normal), and I've now spent the rest of my day cleaning up the house and web surfing. I've downloaded and installed ICQ on my computer and am trying to learn all the nuances (my number is 26993709 in case you're interested).

Jean came home and slept for about an hour. She went back to work and won't be home until seven (she's making up for extended lunchtime naps). I've got a fire going, and the Christmas tree lit. I'm going to spend some time cleaning up the dishes and the house so she and I can finally have some time together. The holidays are great, and it's wonderful to catch up with family after all these years. But after the ice storm, the blackout, the busy trip to Virginia Beach and finally the flu, I just want to spend time with Jean.

It's still nice and chilly here in Richmond. The high was around thirty today, but the sky was clear. The forecast for the weekend mentions a possibility of snow, which would be much nicer than the Christmas Eve ice storm.
