Rest
November 14, 1998

Jean woke up early this morning, around 3:30. After trying to fall back to sleep for an hour, she got up and had a productive early morning. By 8 AM she came back to bed to wake me (I like sleeping late on Saturday mornings). I turned on the radio and we listened to Weekend Edition with Scott Simon. This week they had a studio audience, which changed the dynamics of the show. Probably the best segment was the last, when Mary Chapin Carpenter played. Jean and I both like MCC, and we have been looking for her recording of "10,000 Miles". The song opens the movie Fly Away Home. The movie's not bad, but I don't want to watch TV just to hear the song. While MCC didn't play the song, she is apparently going to release an album in the Spring with greatest hits and some previously unreleased material. Jean and I have our fingers crossed.

I've felt slightly off all day today. Breakfast was nice (coffee, orange juice and a bagel), but at some point in the early afternoon, my stomach just wasn't its happy usual self. That slowed my day considerably, though it didn't mess with my overall enjoyment of the day. After lunch Jean took a nap (catching up for this morning). I was on my computer for a bit - I brought my home page up to date - then I decided I needed a nap too. Since Jean had been sleeping for an hour, I was afraid I might wake her up, so I went into the den and took a nap with Pasta and Neon.

The dogs aren't allowed to enter our bedroom, so I don't get to sleep with them ever. When we lived in Bumpass I would occasionally sleep downstairs on the sofa bed, just to have a little down time with them. They were always excited when I was setting up the bed, but within thirty minutes, both would have taken their preferred positions for the night. Today's nap was fun. Both of them had been pretty playful right before I invited them onto the sofa, but both seemed to realize that this was cuddle time. At one point, just before I dozed, Neon was laying parallel on top of Pasta. I couldn't imagine Pasta enjoyed this, but I never saw him move. When I woke up, Jean was there, stroking my hair. That's a fun way to wake up! We talked for a bit, and then she went out to the stores.

I got a fire going in the study and spent the evening reading and computing. Jean got back after 8:30, but she brought dinner from Burger King. We ate, then brought in all the stuff she bought, and then we settled in to read in front of the fire (Jean on the love seat, me at my desk). After listening to a few compact discs this evening, I finally tuned in to the MPR RealAudio broadcast.

With the exception of two trips to our pile of firewood, I stayed inside today. It was cold enough that when I took my nap, I was happy to have a throw as well as two dogs for warmth. The sky was gray all day and we're expecting rain tonight.

Listening: Symphony Number 2 in C Minor (Mahler); Salzburg Symphonies (Mozart), MPR

Reading: Judith (finished); Our Oriental Heritage (Will Durant)
