Course Description:

The goal of this course is to complete preparations for the student to read authentic classical Latin. The format of the course will be roughly the same as Latin 101 and 102, that is, reading stories, discussing them in Latin, doing exercises in Latin, discussing Latin grammar in English, composing Latin, and so on. For those of you new to this method of Latin instruction, there may be some strain at the beginning of the semester, but no great disadvantage. We hope that in time you will eschew the mathematical approach to Latin so common in high schools and come to see Latin as a language similar to all others -- except in its wealth of brilliant literature.

Course Requirements:

For each chapter or reading we complete students will be required 1) to read the story carefully enough to be able 2) to discuss it in Latin in class, 3) to prepare exercises when assigned, 4) to bring in problems and questions about the content of the chapter for class discussion, 5) to compose a short paragraph in Latin which uses some of the vocabulary and all of the grammar from each chapter, and 6) take a midterm and cumulative final exam.
