Tom Mullen is an assistant metro editor for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He joined the Times-Dispatch in 1992 when it merged with The Richmond News Leader.
Mullen's assignments at the Times-Dispatch typically include directing daily and Sunday news coverage of Henrico and Hanover counties and editing and directing four weekly suburban sections. He writes "Writer's Block" essays for the Flair section as often as he can and also enjoys writing for the Food section.
Mullen covered a variety of beats during his six years at The Richmond News Leader, including local government, schools and religion. The religion beat required travel across the country for coverage of a wide range of national events.
Since moving to the Times-Dispatch, Mullen has been a general-assignment reporter, copy editor, metro weekend editor and night state editor.
Mullen also has worked for the weekly Amelia (Va.) Bulletin-Monitor as a reporter, editor and photographer; for the Newport News (Va.) Times-Herald as a copy editor; and for the Kingsport (Tenn.) Times-News as a police and general-assignment reporter.
Outside of newspaper work, Mullen coaches youth soccer and baseball, is an essayist for U.S. Catholic magazine and serves as a lay preacher at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Richmond. A native of New York City, Mullen attended high school in Chesterfield County. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and communications from East Tennessee State University in 1984, and a master's degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986.
He has taught news writing courses at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has been a guest lecturer in mass communication and English classes at VCU. He has been a member of the adjunct facult at UR since 1997 and has taught news writing, copy editing, public affairs reporting and the practicum classes.
Mullen lives in Glen Allen with his wife, Betsy Powell Mullen, a writer who formerly was a reporter at The News Leader and the Times-Dispatch, and their four children. (Posted Aug. 22, 2001.)
