Mullen also has worked for the weekly Amelia (Va.) Bulletin-Monitor as a reporter, editor and photographer; for the Newport News (Va.) Times-Herald as a copy editor; and for the Kingsport (Tenn.) Times-News as a police and general-assignment reporter.

Outside of newspaper work, Mullen coaches youth soccer and baseball, is an essayist for U.S. Catholic magazine and serves as a lay preacher at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Richmond. A native of New York City, Mullen attended high school in Chesterfield County. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and communications from East Tennessee State University in 1984, and a master's degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986.

He has taught news writing courses at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has been a guest lecturer in mass communication and English classes at VCU. He has been a member of the adjunct facult at UR since 1997 and has taught news writing, copy editing, public affairs reporting and the practicum classes.

Mullen lives in Glen Allen with his wife, Betsy Powell Mullen, a writer who formerly was a reporter at The News Leader and the Times-Dispatch, and their four children. (Posted Aug. 22, 2001.)
