Trumpet Class Spring 2000
Dr. Davison
x8281
The nature of this course is two-fold: a one-hour weekly lesson, and a trumpet class which meets Thursdays, from 4:30 5:30 in the band room (see handout for topics/exact dates). Attendance at your lesson and trumpet class each week is mandatory. A failure to attend a lesson or trumpet class will result in lowering of your grade by 1/2 (i. e. one miss, A-). If I cannot make a lesson time, we will reschedule the lesson for another time. If you have a conflict, please notify me ASAP. This semester, I will let you miss one lesson without penalty. Since the trumpet class is a "group effort", no absences will be allowed w/out penalty. The UR Trumpet Ensemble will perform on a music dept. repertoire class. This class meets on Tuesdays, from 4:40 5:30. I will let you know the date of the concert. Please take note (no pun intended) of the enclosed schedule of trumpet class events. Be ready to perform at every class (this means bring your instrument!). I look forward to working w/all of you let's have a great semester!

Objective(s) of the Jazz Trumpet Curriculum
The objective of this course is to fulfill a student's
potential as a jazz artist. Technical skill will be developed
to facilitate a re-awakening of each student's childlike imagination.
There are four levels of development that will deal with jazz
performance practice(s), improvisation, sight reading and overall
technical jazz performance practices. Dependent upon the student's
entering abilities and experience, the levels could be completed
in varying amounts of time. Each semester you will write your
"mission statement" and outline your goals and objectives
for the semester. We will periodically refer to this statement
in relation to your progress. There will be a community component
whereby the student will teach a lesson or a master class about
jazz trumpet perfomance at a secondary school in the Richmond
area.
Lesson Structure
The lesson will consist of the following procedures:
1) Jazz duet - early jazz to be bop articulation
2) Call and response over blues
3) Jazz Etude (sing & play)
- the student will play a lyrical etude (i.e. Bordogni)
in a classical and
jazz style
4) Jazz Standard (sing & play)
5) Jazz Transcriptions (check on notated progress of student)
6) Composing assignments

Testing
Testing at each level will involve performing a duet with another
