Ladelle McWhorter, James Thomas Professor in Philosophy
Professor of Environmental Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexualities Studies
Department of Philosophy
University of Richmond
Education:
In 1982 I earned my B.A. in Philosophy from Birmingham-Southern College (Birmingham, Alabama), where I studied with Dr. Paul Franke, Dr. O.C. Weaver, and Dr. Earl Gossett.
In 1985 and 1986 respectively I earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee), where I studied with Dr. Charles Scott.
In addition, I spent a summer semester at St. John's College in the British Studies at Oxford program, two summers at the Collegium Phenomenologicum in Perugia, Italy, and one summer semester at a German language institute at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria.
Employment:
I came to the University of Richmond as an Associate Professor of Philosophy in 1992. In 1997 Associate Professor of Women's Studies was added to my title to reflect the fact that about one-third of my teaching is done in UR's Women's Studies program (now the Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Studies Program). I was chair of the Department of Philosophy from 1996 until 1999.
In 1999 I was promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Philosophy and Women's Studies. In 2005 I became the James Thomas Professor in Philosophy and also accepted a three-year term as co-coordinator of WGSS along with Dr. Dorothy Holland. In 2010 I added Professor of Environmental Studies to my title, reflecting the fact that I teach Environmental Ethics on a regular basis.
From 1986 until 1992 I was Assistant and then Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri.
From 1983 until 1986 I was an Instructor in Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. Also at Vanderbilt, during academic year 1983-1984, I was the Coordinator of the Philosophy Department's Living/Learning Center, known as The McGill Project.
Prior to attending graduate school, I was a typesetter with Dynatype, Inc., in Birmingham, Alabama. I have also worked as a pizza maker, cafeteria line server, clerical and data entry temp, receptionist, and lab technician in a grain elevator.
