Man Out of Time
June 1, 1999

Another busy weekend, even if it was an extended one. Since we bought the house way back before Colette was born, we've talked about our first investments to fix the place up. It's a nice house, but it needs tons of care before it'll be up to snuff.

At closing we received a bunch of money from the woman who sold us the house to take care of some outstanding electrical and plumbing issues. Beyond that we had a little bit of money. This weekend we got a new lawn mower, a vacuum and a new set of sheets for our bedroom. It's a start.

Jean's also got a small can of paint. We're going to start with Colette's room, which we plan to paint yellow (leaving the trim white). We may go back later and paint the ceiling, but we're not sure about that yet. Jean needs some time to sand down some rough spots on our test wall, then she'll give it a coat so we can see if we like it. If we do, we're off to get the rest of the paint we'll need to get the job done.

I need to drop this "we" stuff. If I so much as pick up a paint brush our whole house will be doomed. In college, my theatre pals wouldn't even let me paint flats black. Sheesh.

Colette is going through a growth spurt. Sunday afternoon she slept for four and a half hours, and she still managed to go to sleep on time that night. When she's awake she's less playful than usual, but only because she need to be fed constantly. Jean and I are experimenting with seven and eight ounce bottles to see if they can help her wait two hours before the next bottle, with some success. The only problem is that she's occasionally spitting up many many ounces after a feeding. Sometimes. Other times she'll drink an eight ounce bottle, give me a resounding burp, and be ready to play until she drifts off to sleep.

Jean got a call from day care today at 3:30. Colette's temperature was 99.something and she wouldn't finish her bottle because she was screaming. Jean left work, picked Colette up, and took her to the doctor, where she was pronounced completely well. Colette had an ear infection three weeks back and we were due for a follow-up appointment tomorrow, but we both figured the screaming meant that the infection was back. Nope. Just a baby growing and feeling fussy.

She weighs 14 pounds, 14 ounces today. Jean said the doctor's office only checks height at well-visits, so we'll have to wait for her next official measuring.

Somewhere in all of this I'm trying to keep up with work and all my other interests. Jean and I are both still trying to find a schedule that allows us to take care of Colette and still have our own lives. We had a good start today, even getting into work early, and I hope the rest of the week is this good.

weather
I just stepped outside to check on the weather; I'd managed to stay in my office all day today. It's hazy and hot out, though it's a little cooler now that the sun is beginning to set.
