56

As promised, I scanned a few photos this morning. You can see them on my Photorama One and Photorama Two pages. More to come as I find more to scan.

It's been a good day. I slept in until almost 9 AM, despite Jean waking up at 4:30 AM. She tells that I walked into the kitchen at 4:45 to tell her that I hoped she wasn't up at that hour to do the dishes. I have no recollection of such a discussion, but I am quite good at that kind of thing. I found my way back to bed, while Jean managed to head into work around 6:30.

Once I finally got up and going, I went in to the campus. My pals in Information Services thought I was nuts to come in on my day off, despite my explanation that I was in for fun stuff. After scanning, I came home and quickly put the Photorama pages together. I decided I could slap them together quick and dirty, or I could think on it and put them up later in a more artful way. Quick and dirty won out: I can always clean up later, but the images are out there now.

Jean came home just before 1:30. We had lunch, then she took an hour nap. When she got up we had our grand afternoon and evening out. We started by going to a gourmet chocolate shop in Carytown. We did pretty well, only getting a few things each. Next, we went to Mongrel, a shop that sells cards and knick-knacks. We got some thank you cards for the Thanksgiving baby shower, and I got some stationery. Both my brothers and both my sisters have e-mail now, and there aren't too many other people I know so well that I'd write a letter. But the stationery was cool (vellum) and I figured I could send my mom and dad letters, since they seem not to be very interested in their computer.

We went to Starbucks for coffee and Fuddruckers for dinner, before heading on to the hospital for our penultimate baby class. Tonight's gripping topic: Baby Safety. I'd always grouped this class in my mind with the class we still have to take, Baby CPR. Somehow when it's grouped like that, it sounds important. As we were driving to the hospital tonight, it finally occurred to me that we were in for another evening of really basic basics.

Some of the things I learned tonight:

  • Plastic bags are not toys
  • Keep medicines out of baby's reach
  • Don't leave babies alone in a filled bathtub
  • Fires go up

Over two hours of wisdom. And because the car seat safety guy talked so long, we never got to the one topic I wanted to hear (immunizations). I'm sure there must have been someone in the room who didn't know these fairly common things, but I wish there was some process where we could have self-selected out of the class. Tonight would have been a nice night to sit by the fireplace and read.

Jean is having irregular contractions. She says these are different from what was going on the Saturday after Thanksgiving when we drove back to Richmond. These contractions are precisely described in all our pregnancy books: they start at the back and work their way forward. The contractions come and go, and Jean is still in great spirits. Bumpy also seems to be doing well. She's saying hello in between contractions, in her own special way.

HEY! Jean just finished knitting Bumpy's first hat! It's really pretty -- all white for a winter baby. Both of us have tried it on, but it didn't fit. She spent some extra time working on the seam in the hat so it wouldn't show. It's smooth and soft and I can't believe we're just eight weeks away from someone needing it!

A nice cool sunny day today. There were wisps of clouds high up, and some jets were leaving trails across the sky. Walking around Carytown was pleasant, even though the sun had gone down.
