Terminator Furbys
November 19, 1998 In between meetings today was the Thanksgiving lunch. I wasn't originally planning to go, since I pretty much hate nice food. But we ran out of my usual lunch stuff at home, so I figured I might as well go. It's nice to sit down with the gang from IS every now and then. It's tough for the lot of us to talk for long without drifting back into computer talk. But we do try. Most of the Administrative group has been interested in Furbys lately. Lisa has one, and several others are interested in them. Mitch is also interested in the new Legos that have programmable chips in them (that didn't take long, did it?). We got talking about them all, and I suggested at one point that we ought to be able to combine the Furbys with these new Legos to create some kind of programmable terminator toy. This afternoon I went to the IS web meeting. I guess phase one is complete, whatever phase one was. I'm still fairly new to Information Services and was not on board when they set the agenda. The group discussed what can best be described as phase two, and also discussed publicity for the IS web site. It's got tons of information, but I'm not sure everyone knows what's there. So we're going to find ways to communicate the on-line resources available. Jean took the afternoon off from work to be home when the landscape person came to fix the window. She says he was nice, and the window seems to be in good shape. Jean was happy to be home, though she spent a good part of the afternoon cleaning up. She got her hair cut again early this evening. This is the third time within a month, but I think it actually looks longer. At least the bangs look longer (must be an optical illusion). Jean isn't going into work tonight. She went in Monday night and Tuesday night. Wednesday night was anniversary night (sort of), so tonight is the first time she gets home time to do what she wants. I think she's working on a hat for baby (one to replace the lousy hat baby's going to get from the hospital). I finally managed to download the Star Wars Episode One trailer. The site has been overwhelmed since Tuesday when the trailers played in a few theatres around the country. I tried downloading the file a couple of times yesterday morning and again this morning. By tonight when I got home, the folks at starwars.com had more servers serving and the file finally downloaded. The movie looks promising. They've had more than a decade to mess things up, but it looks like the vision has held.
I do wish they wouldn't mess around with the computer generated
bits, though. They're distracting and all too often cartoonish
(taking away from the movie). I'm glad for Jurassic Park, but Star
Wars was almost ruined by the Ewoks. Cartoon elements are not
likely to keep the movie focused on the story.
It was cool again today, and the sky remained a pale, almost hazy,
blue. The last leaves are falling from the trees, and I suspect
I'll finally get around to raking this weekend (unless it rains
again). Our driveway is so covered with leaves that I couldn't
find this morning's paper when I first looked.
