Bit by Bit
November 6, 1998

I'm just back from a nice dinner downtown with Jean and her mother, who is visiting this weekend. Her mom hasn't visited us since we moved to this house more than a year ago, so it's nice to finally have her up. We went to the Richbrau Brewing Company down in Shockoe Slip. The food is pretty good, the beer is very good, and the atmosphere tonight was just a bit louder than I expected. We had to shout to be heard against the music upstairs. I was surprised because we'd been there on a Saturday night three weeks ago and it was relatively quiet then. I guess Fridays are party days at Richbrau.

Only a couple of meetings today, preliminary stuff that'll be a year or two before the projects are up and running. I spent most of my afternoon finishing up a test plan for a new web interface to our administrative database. We're hoping to have this one done before November has ended.

Fun news: I just received today the card that I need to connect my HP ScanJet to my computer. When I bought my computer back in January, I bought the scanner too, but the wonderful folks at Dell neglected to tell me that my modem and sound system would be using the two ports I could use for the scanner. Getting a card to fit in one of the unused slots was more than $200, but Jean and I decided we'd like to be able to get some photos on-line. Plus the warranty on the computer runs out at the end of January: we'd hate to get the card later and find out then that we're stuck with the scanner. I'll have the scanner up and running by the end of the day tomorrow, and hope to have some images online before the weekend is over.

More fun news: After dinner tonight Jean and I finally checked our snail mail. My sister Colette sent us an invitation to a baby shower. For us! It's later this month at 10:45 in the morning (note to self: ask Colette why the weird time). This is the first (and so far only) baby shower anyone's thrown for Jean and she's really excited about it. So am I.

It's been a chilly day today. Even with my coat on tonight, it seemed cold. But we could see the moon above the city skyline tonight -- a sight we don't often see.

Listening: WFMT (Chicago)

Reading: Nothing tonight -- company's here!
