Jeffrey Riehl, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choirs, joined the faculty in 1995 following studies at the Eastman School of Music, from which he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting. At UR, he conducts the University Choir and the highly-acclaimed Schola Cantorum, and teaches studio voice, conducting, and a variety of courses for both music majors and general students, including The Music Scene, Music in Film, The Mass from Plainchant to Part, and Choral Music and Spirituality.

In demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, Dr. Riehl has conducted numerous county, district, and regional high school choir festivals, led workshops in group vocal technique for church, civic, professional, and collegiate organizations, and served as vocal advisor to a number of military and professional choirs. Professor Riehl has studied conducting with Joseph Flummerfelt, Frauke Haasemann, Robert Shaw, Helmuth Rilling, David Effron, William Weinert, and Donald Neuen

Riehl is also active as a tenor, regularly presenting recitals with the University of Richmond's Faculty Vocal Quartet as well as performances of oratorio. He has performed with the Westminster Choir, Affetti Musicali, the Eastman Collegium Musicum, the Eastman Capella Antiqua, the Eastman Chorale, the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, and numerous collegiate music organizations. Additionally, Riehl is conductor of the Chancel Choir at Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Richmond which has performed at the National ACDA convention in Chicago. Dr. Riehl's voice studies have been with Thomas Houser, Carol Webber, Marvin Keenze, Philip Morgan, and Oren Brown.

Riehl is Artistic Director and Conductor of the James River Singers, has performed at the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, SC as a member of the Carolina Chamber Chorale, and has performed for the Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshops. During the spring semester 2003, he was artist-in-residence at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia where he sang and worked with the APZ Tone Tomsic, adjudicated choral competitions, and began research for a book on Slovenian choral repertoire.

Professor Riehl's research interests include the choral music of Slovenia and Central Europe, the music and culture of eighteenth-century Vienna, the sources of stylistic variety in the sacred works of Mozart, the unpublished songs of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel; teaching vocal technique in the choral setting; and film music. He is currently preparing a comprehesive guide to the sacred works of W. A. Mozart.
