Dr. Jennifer Nourse received her BA from University of Tennessee, and her MA and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Cultral Anthropology. She studied Indonesian at Cornell University, UC Berkeley and Satya Wacana University and has conducted fieldwork in Sulawesi, Indonesia (Southeast Asia) and Bassarel, Guinea-Bissau (West Africa). In addition to numerous articles and presentations, Dr. Nourse's book, Conceiving Spirits : Birth Rituals and Contested Identities Among Lauje of Indonesia was published in the Fall of 1999 by Smithsonian Press. Dr. Nourse is currently working on two research projects: (1) Displacement, Violence, and Colonial Culture: Gendered and Memories of War in Sulawesi, Indonesia and (2) Mothering, Midwifery and Ethnic Identity in Central Sulawesi. In the summer of 2001 she will travel to the Netherlands to complete archival work for project number one. In the near future she plans to return to Sulawesi.
