Calliandra emarginata

Family: Leguminosae/Mimosaceae (or subfamily Mimosoideae)

"Calliandra" translates as "beautiful stamens," the powder-puff-like androecium being the most prominent part of the flowers. Actually, each "powder puff" is a flower cluster; note the tight cluster of buds at the extreme left of the illustration. Styles and stigmas, one per flower, are also scattered among the stamens. This powder puff mode of pollen presentation and pollination is characteristic of the Mimosaceae/Mimosoideae.
