Justicia brandegeana (Beloperone guttata) - Shrimp Plant

Family: Acanthaceae

The common name refers to the prominent reddish floral bracts. The combination of opposite leaves, spike inflorescence with prominent bracts, and zygomorphic sympetalous corolla characterizes the family Acanthaceae.

Leaves of Justicia brandegeana bear numerous cystoliths, another characteristic feature of the family. These cystoliths can be most easily observed via dissecting microscope with strong illumination from below.
