Euphorbia X lomi

A hybrid between Euphorbia lophogona and Euphorbia millii, both species native to Madagascar. The hybrid epithet is formed from the first two letters of the parental specific epithets. The cyathia shown here have just opened up and are in (or approaching) the pistillate phase.

Euphorbia neriifolia

Each cyathium (flower cluster) is rimmed by 5 reddish bracts. The actual flowers are located in a central cluster. Plants in the UR greenhouse produce only staminate flowers, so the species is presumed to be dioecious. The staminate flowers are minute, each consisting of a single stamen (the red t-shaped structures) bearing two well-separated pollen sacs (the yellow blobs located on the arms of the "t").

Euphorbia neriifolia is native to India. The specific epithet denotes a similarity to the leaves of Nerium, the oleander.
