The archeological zone at Rancho Kiuic is the heart of the Helen Moyers Biological and Cultural Reserve. The ruins and the land that they occupy are property of the federal government of Mexico. Ca 2000 acres immediately surrounding the archeological zone constitute the reserve proper. The ruins are being studied as a joint investigation between Mexican archeologists, researchers at Millsaps College, and collaborators at other institutions. The reserve is forested land that has not been subjected to slash and burn agriculture for many decades and therefore hosts relatively rich flora and fauna.
