Short Paper #8

1. Reread Section V, Part I of An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding.

2. Explicate the third paragraph on p. 508, the paragraph beginning "What then is the conclusion ..." and ending "... either to produce, or to prevent."

'To explicate' just means 'to explain fully'. Thus, explicating a paragraph will involve, (a) explaining clearly and concisely, in your own words, (a) each sentence of the paragraph and (b) the relationships that hold between the sentences of the paragraph.
If Hume uses technical terms in a sentence, be sure to specify what Hume means by his terms. If what Hume says in this paragraph depends upon what he has said earlier, be sure to explain and clarify that dependence.
[Imagine that the only piece of the Inquiry that some individual has read is the paragraph you are explicating. Your job is to clearly and concisely explain to that individual the meaning and import of what Hume is saying in that paragraph.]
