1. Reread Section V, Part I of An Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding.
2. Explicate the third paragraph on p. 508, the paragraph beginning "What then is the conclusion ..." and ending "... either to produce, or to prevent."
'To explicate' just means 'to explain fully'. Thus, explicating
a paragraph will involve, (a) explaining clearly and concisely,
in your own words, (a) each sentence of the paragraph and (b)
the relationships that hold between the sentences of the paragraph.
If Hume uses technical terms in a sentence, be sure to specify
what Hume means by his terms. If what Hume says in this paragraph
depends upon what he has said earlier, be sure to explain and
clarify that dependence.
[Imagine that the only piece of the Inquiry that some individual
has read is the paragraph you are explicating. Your job is to
clearly and concisely explain to that individual the meaning and
import of what Hume is saying in that paragraph.]
