Short Paper #5

 

Consider the following utterance: (A) "Our stable genius of a president is the Holy Roman Empire."

 

(1) Defend the claim that (A) is a metaphor.

(2) Can any of the theories of metaphor discussed in the readings (Davidson, Martinich, Lycan) plausibly account for (A)? Justify your answer.

(3) Defend yourself against at least one objection to your answer and justification in (2).

 

Extra directions: This assignment should be a minimum of 2 standardly formatted typewritten pages. There is no maximum length, but since I value precision, conciseness, and clarity, excess verbiage should be avoided.
