II.Essay: [36 points] Answer one of the following question sets and defend and justify your answers. Be sure to consider possible objections that someone advocating the opposite position might make to your defense and show why those objections fail. You may appeal to the readings of the class so far, but if you appeal to some part that has been objected to, you must provide reasons why the objection is not valid or at least not also an objection to your claims.

A. You are part of a survey team that has landed on a planet in a different solar system.   What, if any, evidence would indicate beings on the planet with (a) mental states, (b) conciousness, or (c) intelligence? Given such indications, how could or would you go about testing the hypotheses that there are beings with mental states, conciousness, or intelligence on the planet?   Describe in detail to what degree your tests would be adequate.   Why is it important that you know whether or not there are beings with mental states or intelligent beings on the planet or not?

B. Superaliens have come to Earth and appear to be running a battery of tests on all the inhabitants, both organic and inorganic.   They appear to be treating no group in any special way.   Suppose they are seeking to determine if there are any beings on Earth with (a) mental states, (b) consciousness, and (c) intelligence. What actions would or could you take in order to attempt to demonstrate that you have all three? Describe in detail the conditions for success for various actions and whether it is possible you could fail to satisfy the aliens regardless of your actions? Why is it important to you that you be recognized as an intelligent being?
