FYS: Puzzles and Paradoxes--Short Paper #1
1. Consider the following scenario:
Imagine a ship, The Ship of Theseus, which is made of 1000 pieces of wood. Every week, when Theseus returns to dock, he has Naupegus, the shipwright, replace one piece of wood with a fresh piece. After the 1000th week, however, when Thesues comes to collect his ship, Naupegus refuses. Naupegus points to a pile of 1000 rotting boards beside the dock, and says--"There is your ship Thesues; the one in dry dock is mine."
Who is right?
2. In a minimum of three typewritten pages (12pt Times New Roman font, doublespaced with a maximum of 1 inch margins) present and defend your answer. Part of your defense must include (i) articulating why the other answer(s) to the question are incorrect and (ii) articulating at least one cogent objection to your position and showing why that objection is false.
All assignments are to be done on separate sheets of paper. Each sheet of paper must be numbered and have your name on it. Late assignments receive no credit. Note that, since I value clear and precise language, unnecessary verbiage is to be avoided.
Due: Friday, March 17, at the beginning of class.
