PROGRAM IN HONDURAS

What is the Service/Learning (S/L) Program?

A unique opportunity to experience from every angle our Central American neighbor - Honduras.

·  To learn about its people, history, economy, and relation to the United States. 

·  To work side-by-side with Hondurans on community projects. 

·  To speak the language and appreciate the culture of our hosts. 

·  To visit the families and homes of new found friends. 

·  To enlarge our vision and assess our values.

Who is involved?

Where will we be?

·  HPI Living and Learning Center, Perryville, Arkansas. Orientation. 

·  Tegucigalpa. Exploration of the capital city. 

·  NPH orphanage outside of Tegucigalpa. Live and work with 600+ children at the beautiful "Rancho Santa Fe" --acres of pine forest and rolling hills. 

·  La Granja (rural), Honduras. La Granja's demonstration farm and retreat center has basic accommodations and wonderful food. Work on projects around the farm and learn about rural Honduras. 

·  The village experience. Live in a remote village and participate in one of the CCD construction projects with Hondurans.

·        The Mayan ruins at Copán.

·        The beautiful beaches of Tela and the Lancetilla Arboretum. Visit a Garifuna village.

What will we be doing?
 

·  Learning about the NPH orphanage, playing with kids, assisting in the "Talleres" -

·  On the farm and in a village, working on projects according to the needs of the community - helping to construct animal shelters, tortilla kitchens, churches, and the like.

·  Speaking with a model farmer and his family, an environmentalist, a women's group, children and teachers at school, health workers, university teachers, government officials, and many others.

·  Visiting a rain forest, villages, Mayan ruins, churches and schools, downtown Tegucigalpa, a resort beach, local restaurants, and more.

·  Speaking and learning the language, collecting research, conducting interviews, thinking, and talking about our experience and Honduras.

 What about...

The cost is approximately $1800 (exclusive of student's transportation costs from school or home to Little Rock and incidental expenses.)  Application Deadline:  February 1, 2002.

In the past, University of Richmond students have completed independent study projects in their respective majors or received International Studies internship credit, Leadership Studies service/learning credit, or WILL service/learning credit for their work; but these arrangements must be made between the student and a representative of his or her particular program of studies.  Students from other institutions may arrange similar projects with their home institutions.
