Course Requirements:

Because this is a seminar, regular, informed participation is the primary requirement for the class. I will distribute reading schedules for each novel; your responsibility is to be up to date with the reading and ready to discuss it when you come to class. Please note that in addition to the readings in the novels, supplemental readings are assigned for several of our themes. These are required. Successful completion of the course requires consistent attendance and informed participation in addition to the written work. You may receive less feedback, or less regular feedback, in this course compared to other upper-division English courses you've taken; the emphasis here is on self-directed study and long-term research. Please consult with me in office hours about your presentations and your research project for the course.

Written Work:

Grades:

Participation (includes oral presentations, class discussion): 50%
Research Project (includes bibliography, paper proposal, final paper): 50%
