Waiting for Bumpy

Jean woke up early this morning feeling "tight." She managed to fall back asleep in the guest room before I woke up for the first time. Once I realized where she'd gone, I tried to keep things quiet. In the end, she finally got up just after eight and managed to make it out the door by eight thirty. When I called her after nine she told me that she was back in work mode and that her stomach wasn't as tight as it had been earlier.

She can only keep this up so much longer. Eventually the baby has to come out. Right?

I've got several meetings scheduled throughout this week, and I keep feeling surprised that I'm actually going to be attending them. This afternoon was the inaugural meeting of the Software Standards Committee (a combination of faculty and Information Services staff working to determine the standard software for faculty, staff and students). I accepted the meeting tentatively more than three weeks ago, but was sure at the time that I wouldn't be able to attend. I even called Jean late this afternoon – just checking – but she's feeling fine. Bumpy is still living up to her name, still romping around inside her mother.

I find myself hoping more and more that we don't make it to our Thursday morning appointment at the doctor. It's not that I don't like the doctor's office: we've only ever had one long wait there and we've had an especially good time joking around with Kim (one of the nurses). It's just that I want the baby to get here before Thursday. I guess I've become impatient again, just like I did last week.

At least we still have the house to think about. Jean spoke with the realtor again today. It appears we're heading for a March 26 closing. The rental agency and the seller have agreed to let us out of our rental agreement a month early. Jean's lined up an inspector to come next Thursday morning (I hope the baby's here by then!). The inspection could take three hours. We also have to schedule a termite inspection.

I haven't mentioned it yet, but my brother Shane is giving us a gift letter to help get us into the house. Without his help we couldn't have made the down payment, so we're extremely grateful for his (and Joanna's) assistance. He was my first call this Saturday after the realtor called to tell us our offer had been accepted.

I'll try to keep myself occupied with work and with the house, but every time I see Jean walking around the house I wonder how much longer before I get to meet my daughter? Jean says it's not completely annoying yet, but I have the feeling this is all going to come back at me when labor truly begins...

The day started gray and cloudy, but around two I turned away from my computer long enough to see the sun streaming in the window. We're due for a warming trend over the coming days, with highs in the sixties. If I weren't waiting for the baby, I'd be walking home from campus on days like this.
