Milton Transcription |
The purpose of this listing is merely to indicate which of the most important works are still unassigned, which have been provisionally "taken," and where they might be found. [Names of assigned volunteers, professional titles omitted--I hope no one takes offense--are capitalized in square brackets.] For the time being, ALASDAIR BRADLEY'S epic transcriptions of the 1698 edition of Milton's works have not been itemized separately lest it deter selections of the critical early editions. Whenever I had the information, I have indicated facsimiles or microfilms.
Note, I have usually included a listing of "editions," but I have omitted the various "issues" and "states" of the text John Shawcross distinguishes so meticulously. (Once the key editions are done, the texts can be refined to acknowledge significant distinctions.) Since this list was compiled as a checklist intended to assist volunteers making with their selections, I have not attempted to preserve Professor Shawcross' careful transcription of capitalization, et alia. This is not meant to be a substitute for his bibliography.
Also, assuming their relative inaccessibility, I have omitted most of the individual state papers (and their translations in French, Dutch, Danish and Italian) in the current listing. Nonetheless, we might later include anything by Milton in whatever languages which excite interest, and to which volunteers have access.
Finally, some of the listings are here simply because they seemed interesting, not because they are at all urgent. Other volunteers are invited to send me their preferences, and I will sort them and add more entries. (Professor Roy Flannagan, indicated by the initials RF, already has.) Please indicate the existence of any facsimile editions, the OCLC Accession numbers, along with the reel and item numbers of any microfilms. Accepted suggestions will be incorporated and credited in an appendix.
On notation: The "Accession numbers" are from WorldCat; Early English
Books, [1641-1700] refers to UMI microfilms. Curios and less important

Finally, this listing acknowledges the selections of slightly more than half of the twenty-some volunteers: some will assist in other capacities; many have simply not made their selections yet. Ideally, everyone--not excluding myself--will transcribe at least one work, and proof at least one other.
