(above) Houses of traditional construction located in Rancho Kiuic's former corrall constitute the first new structures of the reserve's "camp" compound. Eventually the camp will include a dormitory, dining facilities, and classroom/laboratory space.
(above) Well and Ceiba tree. This device, a pump for lifting water from deep below the surface, is one of several structures remaining from the community that once existed at Rancho Kiuic. It is situated in the shade of a large specimen of Ceiba pentandra, the sacred tree of the Maya. The branches and even the bole of this individual are loaded with epiphytic bromeliads.
