My
research focuses on the design of fluorescent protein biosensors. One
of the goals of my group is to design a biosensor for glucose. The constructed
optical biosensor may be used to measure glucose concentrations in complex
media such as blood serum. A second main project in my lab involves
the characterization of a putative glutamine binding protein from Thermatoga
maritima. Finally, we collaborate with Dr. Malcolm Hill (Biology)
isolating and characterizing secondary metabolites from common Chesapeake
Bay sponges, Clathria prolifera and Halichondria bowerbanki.
Students in my lab will learn basic biochemistry and molecular biology
including how to isolate and handle both DNA and proteins. In addition,
students will be exposed to a broad array of scientific techniques including
UV-VIS, fluorescence emission, circular dichroism, HPLC, and basic molecular
modeling. |
